The Complete GST Calculation Guide

How to "Add GST" (Tax Exclusive)

If you know the base price of a product or service, but you need to add the government tax on top of it, use the Add GST (+) mode.

The Math Formula:
GST Amount = (Base Price × GST%) / 100
Total Final Price = Base Price + GST Amount

Example: A laptop base price is ₹50,000. Adding 18% GST gives a tax of ₹9,000. The final customer price is ₹59,000.

How to "Remove GST" (Tax Inclusive)

Sometimes you see a total price (like a receipt) and need to extract the exact tax amount hidden inside it. This is called reverse calculation. Use the Remove GST (-) mode for this.

The Math Formula:
Base Price = Total Price / (1 + (GST% / 100))
GST Amount = Total Price - Base Price

This is crucial for business owners who need to log their net revenue properly in accounting software.

Understanding CGST, SGST, and IGST

In countries like India, the GST structure is split into parts depending on where the sale happens. Our calculator breaks this down automatically for you:

  • CGST (Central GST): Goes to the central government. It is exactly half (50%) of the total GST amount for intra-state sales.
  • SGST (State GST): Goes to the state government. It is the other 50% of the total GST amount.
  • IGST (Integrated GST): Applied when selling between two different states. It is the full 100% combined rate.

Popular Tax Slabs

Different items attract different rates. While you can type any custom percentage into our tool, here are the standard slabs you can click quickly:

  • 5% Slab: Usually for essential household items, sugar, spices, and basic services.
  • 12% Slab: Used for computers, processed food, and business class air tickets.
  • 18% Slab: The most common rate! Used for software, electronics, banking services, and restaurants.
  • 28% Slab: Applied to luxury goods, automobiles, and premium hotels.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

What does GST stand for?

GST stands for Goods and Services Tax. It is a comprehensive, multi-stage, destination-based indirect tax that is applied on every value addition. It replaced many overlapping indirect taxes to create a single, unified market system.

Can I use this calculator outside of India?

Absolutely! Even though GST is highly prominent in India, countries like Canada, Australia, Singapore, and New Zealand also use a GST system. The mathematical formula for adding or removing percentage-based tax is universal. Just switch the currency to your local symbol at the top of the tool.

Why is removing 18% GST not the same as subtracting 18%?

This is the most common mistake people make! If a product is ₹100 + 18% GST, the total is ₹118. However, if you have a total of ₹118 and simply subtract 18% from it (118 - 21.24), you get ₹96.76, which is completely wrong. You must use the reverse tax formula to find the true original base price of ₹100. Our calculator does this tricky reverse math for you instantly.

Is the CGST and SGST split always 50/50?

Yes, when a transaction occurs within the same state (Intra-State), the total GST rate is divided equally between the Central Government and the State Government. If the transaction crosses state borders (Inter-State), the entire amount falls under a single IGST charge.
