The Complete Fabric GSM & Yield Guide

Whether you are a garment manufacturer, a textile wholesaler, or a boutique owner, calculating your fabric yield correctly is crucial for pricing and production. Use our free tool to instantly convert between KG, Meters, and Yards.

How to Calculate KG to Meter

When you buy raw knits or woven fabric from a mill, it is usually sold by weight (Kilograms). But to make a t-shirt or dress, you need to know the length (Meters).

The Math Formula:
Length (Meters) = (Weight in KG Γ— 1000) / (GSM Γ— Width in Meters)

Our calculator automatically converts your inches or centimeters into the correct formula format, saving you from complex manual math!

What is GSM?

GSM stands for Grams per Square Meter. It is the metric measurement of the weight of a fabric. It helps determine the thickness and density of the material.

  • Low GSM (100-150): Lightweight fabrics like sheer cotton, chiffon, and linen. Used for summer shirts and light dresses.
  • Medium GSM (150-200): The standard weight for classic T-shirts, polo shirts, and light trousers.
  • High GSM (200-300+): Heavyweight fabrics like denim, hoodies, and winter jackets.

Understanding Fabric Width (Panna)

Fabric width (often called "Panna" in South Asian markets) is the distance across the fabric roll from one selvage edge to the other.

The wider the fabric, the fewer meters you will get per KG (because the fabric is taking up more area). Standard textile widths are usually 44 inches, 58 inches, or 60 inches. Our tool provides quick-select buttons for these industry standards, but you can type any custom width you need.

Meters vs. Yards

While the metric system (Meters) is standard for scientific formulas, much of the global textile industry still trades in Yards.

1 Meter = 1.09361 Yards.

Our tool automatically outputs your yield in both Meters and Yards simultaneously, so you can negotiate with international buyers or local tailors without needing a second calculator.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Why does a higher GSM mean fewer meters per KG?

Because GSM represents the density and thickness of the fabric. If a fabric is very thick (high GSM), 1 kilogram of it will be shorter in length compared to a very thin, lightweight fabric (low GSM) of the same weight.

How do I find the GSM of my fabric?

The most accurate way is to use a GSM cutter (a small circular cutting tool) and weigh the cut piece on a highly sensitive digital scale. If you are buying from a mill or wholesaler, they will always provide the GSM on the product spec sheet.

Does this calculator work for both knitted and woven fabrics?

Yes! The mathematical relationship between weight, area, and length is universal. Whether it is a knitted cotton t-shirt fabric or a woven silk, the conversion formula works perfectly as long as your GSM and Width inputs are accurate.
